A mandatory software update is now being issued for Mercedes ML 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC vehicles produced between 2012 and 2016, equipped with the OM642 engine and meeting Euro 6b emissions standards.

In Germany, approximately 24,000 vehicles are affected, with a global total of nearly 65,000. Daimler itself confirms the update is compulsory, and non-compliance may lead to the vehicle being officially deregistered.

Daimler states that the update may increase AdBlue consumption but claims it will not impact other parameters like fuel consumption. However, many owners have reported contrary experiences, including increased fuel consumption and other negative consequences.

The effectiveness of the update in reducing nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions is contested. Reporting by the German program Frontal 21 cited tests indicating the update did not lower emissions as hoped. Daimler and the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) maintain that the update can achieve average NOx emission reductions of 25-30%.

HAHN Rechtsanwälte, a firm representing over 5,000 affected individuals in emissions scandal cases, notes that consumers informed by Daimler about this update requirement may be entitled to damages. The firm has secured numerous successful claims, leading to vehicle buybacks and reimbursements.
