Meriaura Group, specializing in environmental solutions for the maritime industry, is preparing to launch a new gypsum application operation in July 2026. The operation's goal is to enhance the Baltic Sea's ecological status by reducing regional eutrophication. This marks the company's first such project since 2021, when it conducted a historically significant gypsum application trial in the Gulf of Finland in collaboration with two other companies and VTT.

Applying gypsum, or calcium sulfate, to the seabed is considered one of the most effective methods for binding phosphorus, a nutrient that contributes to eutrophication. Meriaura Group's upcoming operation will concentrate on areas facing particularly acute eutrophication issues. The company's long-term objective is to support the Baltic Sea's recovery and advance more sustainable maritime practices.

Previous trials by the company have reportedly demonstrated the safety and effectiveness of the gypsum application method. This new initiative is expected to build on those positive outcomes, providing tangible benefits to the Baltic Sea ecosystem. Meriaura Group maintains a commitment to environmental responsibility and actively seeks solutions to address marine environmental challenges.
