Merz to Continue as CDU Leader After Election Losses

Chancellor Friedrich Merz has announced his intention to remain as the leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) despite the party's substantial losses in recent elections. The CDU failed to cross the five percent threshold in the state election in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern for the first time in its 81-year history, and also suffered a defeat in Berlin.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Merz accepted responsibility for the outcomes and declared his commitment to the current political course. He asserted that he possesses the necessary "backbone, steadfastness, and patience" to continue as party chairman and as the nation's chancellor. However, he did not directly address the personal implications for his leadership position.

The election results have spurred criticism from within the party ranks. Christian Gräff, chairman of the Small and Medium-sized Enterprises Union (MIT) in Berlin, has publicly called for Merz's resignation. Speculation about Merz's future has grown, fueled by reports of a secret meeting among several CDU state premiers that reportedly excluded the chancellor.

The CDU's failure to enter the state parliament in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern was a historic blow, marking the first time the party has not achieved representation there. In Berlin, the CDU saw its vote share decrease by 9.5 percentage points.
