Mesabi Metallics Conducts First Production Blast, Boosting U.S. Iron Ore Output

Mesabi Metallics Company LLC announced on July 14, 2026, the successful completion of its first production blast at its site in Nashwauk, Minnesota. This development signifies a resurgence in U.S. iron ore production and aims to reduce the nation's reliance on foreign sources of DR-grade iron ore.

The blast reportedly dislodged approximately 211,000 tons of iron ore, opening the mine's first haul road and enabling the transport of ore from the pit. Mesabi Metallics plans to commence production of high-quality "Patriot Pellet" DR-grade iron ore pellets later in the third quarter.

"This blast moves the project from the preparation phase into the production phase," stated Shane Holman, General Manager – Mine at Mesabi Metallics. CEO Joe Broking added that the operation will support American jobs and strengthen domestic industries, including steel, shipbuilding, and defense.

Mesabi Metallics, part of the Essar Group, is developing the first new iron ore mine and pellet plant in Minnesota in nearly 50 years. The estimated $2.5 billion investment is intended to ensure a reliable domestic supply of critical raw materials for U.S. industries.
