Mesabi Metallics detonates first charge at new Minnesota iron ore mine

Mesabi Metallics Company LLC in Nashwauk, Minnesota, has successfully completed its first production blast, a milestone in the company's effort to become the first new iron ore mine and pellet plant built in the state in 50 years. The blast, using a 66-hole pattern, fractured approximately 211,000 tons of ore in a single detonation.

This operation opens the first ramp to the mine floor, allowing 400-ton haul trucks to extract ore. The company anticipates commencing pellet production later in the third quarter of the year. "This first blast marks the moment this project transitions from the preparation phase into production," said Shane Holman, Mine General Manager at Mesabi Metallics.

The company states the initiative aims to bolster domestic iron ore production and reduce reliance on foreign DR-grade iron ore. Branded "Patriot Pellet," the new product is intended to secure the national supply chain. "Every ton of ore extracted from this mine represents American jobs, American investment, and the recommissioning of American capability," stated Joe Broking, CEO of Mesabi Metallics.

Mesabi Metallics, part of Essar Group, is investing approximately $2.5 billion in the project. The company expects weekly blasting operations to continue as the mine progresses toward full production. The project aims to supply high-quality DR pellets to support the U.S. steel industry, infrastructure construction, shipbuilding, and the defense sector.
