Mesabi Metallics Starts Production at Minnesota Iron Ore Mine
Mesabi Metallics Company LLC announced the completion of its first production blast on July 13, 2026, at its Nashwauk, Minnesota facility, marking a significant step toward resuming domestic DR-grade iron ore pellet production.

Mesabi Metallics Company LLC has completed its initial production blast at its facility in Nashwauk, Minnesota, on July 13, 2026. This milestone is a critical step for the company, aiming to become the first new iron ore mine and pellet plant in Minnesota in fifty years.
The blast, comprising 66 holes and fracturing approximately 211,000 tons of ore, opens the first pit ramp, allowing 400-ton haul trucks to begin transporting ore. Company officials state this precedes the commencement of pellet production later in the third quarter.
Joe Broking, CEO of Mesabi Metallics, stated that the ore represents American jobs and investment, highlighting the company's commitment to domestic steel production. The company is developing what it calls "Patriot Pellet," high-quality DR-grade iron ore pellets intended to reduce U.S. reliance on foreign supply chains.
The project, an investment of approximately $2.5 billion, is positioned to supply essential raw materials for the American steel industry, shipbuilding, and defense sectors, contributing to a broader strategy of reshoring critical industrial capabilities.
