Meta acknowledges AI lag, previews 'Watermelon' model
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg admitted the company lags behind competitors like OpenAI in AI development but revealed plans for a new model codenamed 'Watermelon' to enhance capabilities.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has acknowledged that the company is currently lagging behind competitors such as OpenAI and Anthropic in artificial intelligence (AI) development. Zuckerberg indicated that Meta is actively developing a new AI model, codenamed 'Watermelon,' which is expected to significantly advance the company's AI capabilities.
Reports suggest Meta has also introduced its new Muse Spark 1.1 AI model, marking the company's first commercial offering. Zuckerberg described the model as "very inexpensive" compared to other top-tier models, while offering competitive performance in areas like intelligent agents and programming.
The pricing for Muse Spark 1.1 is reportedly set significantly lower than the flagship models from Google and OpenAI. This pricing strategy could potentially trigger a price war within the AI market.
Zuckerberg stated that the upcoming 'Watermelon' model aims to push Meta's AI intelligence to "the extreme" and directly compete with larger players. The company's objective is to meet and surpass competitor performance moving forward.
