Meta-analysis: Robotic-assisted surgery shows reduced risks and shorter hospital stays

A new large-scale meta-analysis of data from 2010-2020 indicates robotic-assisted procedures using the da Vinci surgical system are associated with fewer complications and shorter hospital stays compared to traditional laparoscopic and open surgery.

A comprehensive meta-analysis covering the period 2010-2020 has reported on the maturing clinical evidence for robotic-assisted surgical procedures. The analysis, based on peer-reviewed literature and encompassing data from 963,125 patients undergoing laparoscopic or VATS (video-assisted thoracic surgery) and 1,585,084 patients undergoing open surgery, highlights significant benefits for procedures performed with the da Vinci surgical system.

Key findings indicate that robotic-assisted surgery significantly reduced conversions to open procedures compared to laparoscopy (55% less likely). It also led to a lower likelihood of blood transfusions (28% less likely versus laparoscopic, 70% less likely versus open) and fewer 30-day complications (14% less likely versus laparoscopic, 39% less likely versus open).

Furthermore, patients undergoing robotic-assisted procedures experienced shorter hospital stays, averaging 0.4 days shorter than laparoscopic procedures and 1.9 days shorter than open surgeries. The rate of 30-day readmissions was also reduced by 23% compared to laparoscopic approaches.

The analysis included seven specific surgical procedures, such as hysterectomy for cervical and endometrial cancer, partial nephrectomy, low anterior resection (LAR), and prostatectomy (surgical removal of the prostate). These findings suggest that robotic-assisted surgery offers a favorable risk profile and improved patient outcomes compared to conventional surgical methods.
