Meta avoids trial in social media harm case
Meta Platforms will not face trial in a planned lawsuit alleging its social media platforms caused harm, as the plaintiff dropped the case just before proceedings were set to begin.
Meta Platforms, formerly Facebook, will not have to face a trial in a case alleging its social media platforms inflicted harm. The lawsuit was dropped by a 15-year-old plaintiff from Florida, identified by the initials R.K.C., less than a week before Meta's lawyers were scheduled to appear in a Los Angeles courtroom.
The case was intended to be the second in a series of bellwether trials. These trials aim to test legal arguments that major social media companies illegally created features designed to be addictive and harmful to teenagers. Previously, TikTok, Snap, and YouTube settled similar claims brought by R.K.C. for undisclosed sums.
The plaintiff's decision to drop the case was attributed to the successful outcomes of prior litigation and concerns about enduring a grueling, weekslong trial. Meta Platforms has not publicly commented on the development.
