Meta blames AI tool for wrongful Instagram account suspension

Meta Platforms stated that an automated security suspension of the No Kings coalition’s Instagram account was triggered by activity from an AI tool named Claude.

19 October 2026

Meta Platforms, the parent company of Instagram and Facebook, has offered a new explanation for the recent, brief suspension of the U.S. protest group No Kings' Instagram account. The company attributed the shutdown to an automated security system that mistakenly flagged activity related to an AI tool called Claude, developed by Anthropic.

Meta spokesperson Andy Stone explained via X on October 19 that the Claude tool was reading the group's profiles, posts, and hashtags at an exceptionally high rate. Stone stated that these large, sequential requests in a short period resembled automated bot traffic, causing Meta's security systems to react erroneously.

The No Kings account was deactivated amid the group's nationwide effort to encourage early voting in U.S. midterm elections. Although the suspension lasted approximately 90 minutes, the group reported that their administrators could not access the account for an additional four hours after its public restoration. The coalition has demanded that Meta account for the incident and implement measures to prevent recurrence.

Meta has previously provided differing accounts of the situation, leading to confusion. Despite correcting the error, the company has not specified which Claude tool was used or by whom. The incident highlights concerns about how automated systems can cause issues for users, particularly politically active groups during critical times.
