Meta CEO Zuckerberg Urges US to Reduce Policy Obstacles for Open Source AI

Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg has urged the United States to decrease policy obstacles hindering open-source AI development, stating it is crucial for American companies to remain competitive against international rivals, particularly China. The call comes as Meta releases its new open AI model, Muse Glimmer.

Muse Glimmer is designed to be smaller and capable of running on consumer hardware, such as a Mac or PC with a single graphics card, aiming to enable AI tasks directly on personal devices. Zuckerberg emphasized Meta's long-standing commitment to open models, advocating for widespread access to AI rather than concentration of power in few hands.

In a detailed essay, Zuckerberg argued that concerns about AI's dangers should not lead to excessive centralization of control. He specifically pointed to U.S. policies regarding data usage and distillation as significant hurdles compared to other nations. Meta also announced a $1 billion fund to support the AI community, addressing concerns about its large-scale data center operations.

Meta intends to release the weights for its more advanced model, Muse Spark 1.2, developed by its AI research team. Zuckerberg believes that easing regulations, particularly concerning data handling, is key for U.S. leadership in open-source AI. He stated that restricting access to foreign open-source models is not the solution and that the U.S. must remove its own policy-related impediments.
