Meta delays rollout of contentious commercial terms following publisher pushback

Meta Platforms has postponed the enforcement of its new commercial terms of use, moving the effective date from October 30 to November 20. The delay follows intense criticism from news publishers who argue the updated terms grant the company excessive authority to crawl and scrape web content for its own commercial gain.

Earlier this week, the News/Media Alliance, an organization representing over 2,000 publications, issued a formal demand to CEO Mark Zuckerberg to withdraw the policy entirely. The group contends that the terms could allow Meta to exploit journalistic content to develop competitive products without fair compensation, potentially undermining the financial viability of the media industry.

Although Meta has made minor edits to the policy—such as removing explicit references to model training—legal analysts maintain that the remaining language, including terms regarding product development, remains broad enough to allow similar data usage. Publishers remain concerned that failing to accept these terms could result in their content being barred from Meta's platforms.

Meta stated that the three-week extension is intended to allow for better communication with stakeholders regarding its web-crawling practices and the ability of content owners to restrict access through standard robots.txt protocols. However, the core concerns regarding the lack of explicit protections in the terms of use have yet to be addressed.
