Meta Disables AI Image Generation Feature Following Backlash

Meta has quickly removed a newly launched artificial intelligence feature from its Meta AI platform after facing significant public backlash. The tool enabled users to create AI-generated images based on content from public Instagram accounts simply by tagging them.

Introduced just this week, the feature allowed any Instagram user to reference content from public profiles in AI creations. Critically, this process did not require the explicit consent or permission of the account owners whose content was being utilized. The mechanism behind the feature involved tagging public Instagram accounts, which Meta AI would then use as a basis for generating new images.

Meta stated that its intention was to offer a creative tool for users to reference public content. However, the lack of necessary permissions and the potential for misuse, such as creating unauthorized deepfakes, quickly drew criticism from privacy advocates and the public. Many expressed concerns about the potential erosion of privacy and the unauthorized use of personal content.

Responding to the negative reaction, Meta updated its announcement to confirm the feature's removal.
