Meta Glasses Cause Workplace Disruptions

Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses have presented challenges in workplace settings, particularly when used to film individuals without consent. A recent incident at a Target store in the United States demonstrated how the technology can be employed for harassment and intimidation.

In August, Target employee Toru Hinkle encountered two customers who repeatedly inquired about an item's price, despite being informed. Hinkle realized they were being pranked and noticed the customers were wearing Ray-Ban Meta glasses, identifiable by a blinking light. The individuals continued to antagonize Hinkle, persistently asking for the price and deliberately misgendering them.

Hinkle eventually called a store manager for assistance, but the situation escalated further. This incident underscores the privacy and safety concerns associated with smart glasses, especially in public and professional environments. While Meta glasses offer new functionalities, their application carries risks if misused.

The ethical implications of Meta's smart glasses are becoming increasingly apparent.
