Meta Halts Employee Data Collection Program After Backlash

Meta has suspended a program designed to collect employee data for the training of artificial intelligence models. The initiative, known as the Model Capability Initiative (MCI), faced swift and strong opposition from employees after they were informed of mandatory participation and voiced concerns about data privacy.

Employees who were concerned launched a petition and gathered over 1,800 signatures to protest the program, which collected data such as keystrokes and mouse movements. Workers feared the program could expose sensitive information like passwords and credit card details, or even lead to job losses due to AI.

Meta initially responded by offering an opt-out period of 30 minutes, but employees pushed for a complete cessation. Data privacy concerns materialized when the data collected by the program was found to be accessible to all company employees, including private conversations. Consequently, Meta suspended the program almost immediately.

Conflicting accounts exist within the company regarding whether the collected data was actually used for AI training. Meta's CTO, Andrew Bosworth, has stated that the opposition to the initiative made the entire company worse. This incident highlights the ethical questions surrounding employee data collection and the growing willingness of white-collar workers to voice grievances about their working conditions, especially amid ongoing tech industry layoffs and AI-related anxieties.
