Meta improves AI glasses privacy by preventing non-consensual recording

Meta has responded to criticism regarding privacy concerns with its AI glasses by implementing a software update. The company's latest fix aims to prevent the device from capturing video or photos if the recording indicator light is obscured.

Reports indicated that Meta previously closed a loophole that allowed users to cover the recording indicator. While the company had initially deactivated recording if the light was covered before starting, users found a way to bypass this by covering the light after recording had begun.

Alex Himel, Meta's executive vice president of wearables, announced that the new update will ensure the camera stops working if the indicator light is covered during a recording. "That way the capture LED can reliably alert bystanders when photos or videos are being captured for someone’s gallery," Himel stated.

The update seeks to enhance user trust in the devices and mitigate concerns about unauthorized recordings. Previous incidents involving the glasses being used to record individuals without consent have sparked widespread debate on privacy in the face of advancing technology.
