Meta has introduced Meta XR Operator, an experimental developer tool designed to automate the testing of virtual reality (VR) applications using AI agents. The tool is integrated into Meta XR SDK version 205, making it accessible for developers.

The AI agents within XR Operator can independently initiate testing, identify issues, modify code, and validate fixes, creating a complete build-test-validate cycle. This functionality aims to streamline the development process by reducing the need for manual, time-consuming debugging sessions involving the removal and donning of VR headsets.

Beyond automated debugging, XR Operator supports control via natural language commands. Developers can describe test scenarios, and the AI agent will execute the tests, returning results supported by evidence such as screenshots.

However, Meta notes that XR Operator currently cannot process audio cues or accurately assess animation movement and subtle visual defects. The company recommends its use primarily for static and more deterministic testing environments.
