Meta Platforms has launched Facebook Verified, a new, free feature that confirms the identity of a profile through a video selfie verification process. This initiative addresses growing concerns about the proliferation of AI-generated content across platforms.
The process requires users to record a short video selfie. Facial recognition technology then compares this video against existing profile photos to confirm a match. Once verified, users receive a distinct badge on their profile, separate from the paid blue checkmarks. The badge will initially appear on profiles, Facebook Marketplace, Dating, and Groups, with potential expansion to feed posts.
This verification is a one-time process with no subscription fee, contrasting with the previous paid Meta Verified subscription options that ranged from $14.99 to $499.99 monthly.
The introduction of Facebook Verified follows Google's launch of a similar video-based sign-in system for its accounts. As AI capabilities advance, biometric authentication methods like facial recognition are expected to become more prevalent among tech companies to ensure user authenticity.
