Meta has begun distributing a free verification badge to Facebook users, aiming to confirm the authenticity of accounts. This new feature intends to ensure a real person is behind each profile, potentially fostering greater trust within the platform.
To obtain the badge, adult users must record a brief video selfie. Meta will then compare this video against existing photographs on the user's profile. The company states the verification process should take only a few minutes. The video selfie and associated facial data will be automatically deleted within 30 days post-verification, while the badge will remain with the user.
The verification badge will be visible across various Facebook services, including the user's profile, Marketplace, Groups, and the Dating feature. Meta emphasizes that the badge confirms only the successful completion of the selfie check and does not endorse the user or guarantee the quality of any listed items.
The rollout follows recent statements from Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg regarding the company's focus on human users amidst advancements in artificial intelligence. The increasing ease with which fake profiles, photos, and messages can be generated due to AI has highlighted the demand for reliable identity verification methods.
