Meta unveiled its latest AI model, Muse Spark 1.3, yesterday, demonstrating faster speeds and improved performance on third-party benchmarks compared to its previous version. CEO Mark Zuckerberg described the release as Meta's most significant advancement yet in coding and agentic tasks.

Muse Spark 1.3 shows substantial gains over the March 1.2 release, particularly in long-running agent tasks. The version currently accessible to developers offers one of the strongest price-performance ratios among top-ranked independent models. Meta's most advanced results stem from its "max reasoning" configuration, which is undergoing final safety testing and is expected to be released shortly.

The version rolling out this week via Meta's Muse Code harness and API utilizes previously available reasoning settings, such as "xhigh." This raises questions about how closely the currently deployable version for enterprises can approach "frontier" capabilities and at what actual cost. While the released model is highly capable, it does not currently lead industry benchmarks.

Muse Spark 1.3's "xhigh" configuration positions it among the leading available models but does not surpass top competitors like Anthropic's Claude Fable 5.1. This still marks a considerable improvement from Muse Spark 1.2, which generally lagged behind competitors in coding benchmarks. The new iteration now competes effectively with models from OpenAI and Anthropic across several coding and agentic evaluations.

Meta also states the model is easier to operate, capable of managing multiple workflows and reducing tool calls and token usage. These operational efficiencies could prove more valuable to businesses than minor shifts in benchmark rankings. Meta has not reduced its API pricing for the model with this release.
