Meta Restricted Human Rights Forum's Posts in India

Meta has restricted two Instagram posts by the Human Rights Forum (HRF) in India that pertained to Google's proposed AI data center in Andhra Pradesh. The organization condemned the move, demanding the immediate restoration of the content and a clear explanation for the restrictions, citing potential infringements on public discourse.

This follows similar actions by Meta against the Environmental Reporting Collective concerning content about the same data center project. HRF stated that the restricted posts did not contain unlawful material and that Meta invoked Section 79(3)(b) of India's Information Technology Act for the restrictions.

In contrast, X (formerly Twitter) has not yet restricted the content and informed HRF of a request for removal, adhering to its transparency policy. The Guntur urban police in Andhra Pradesh had sent a notice to X seeking the removal of posts related to HRF.

Google is planning a significant investment in an AI data center in Andhra Pradesh, aiming to support businesses and researchers, and bolster India's technological infrastructure. This move has been met with scrutiny regarding transparency and environmental impact.
