Meta Supports Plastic Recycling Startup in First Factory Development
Tech giant Meta is backing the development of MacroCycle's first plant, a company creating a new form of plastic recycling. The company claims its process uses 80 percent less energy.
Technology company Meta is supporting the development of the first factory for plastic recycling firm MacroCycle, assisting the startup with its new plant construction.
The collaboration, announced in November 2026, follows Meta's withdrawal from a corporate renewable energy initiative earlier this year. The company has since begun building natural gas power plants for its data centers, raising questions about the rationale for this new investment.
MacroCycle has developed a novel method for recycling plastics using chemical solvents rather than melting them down. According to the company, its process consumes 80 percent less energy than traditional methods.
Meta's involvement with MacroCycle will provide the tech giant with Environmental Attribute Certificates (EACs). Meta has stated it continues to pursue its goal of net-zero emissions across its value chain by 2030, despite its reported greenhouse gas emissions rising approximately 9.4 percent between 2023 and 2024.
