Meta Unveils New Smart Glasses Amid Ongoing Privacy Concerns

Meta Connect yesterday saw the unveiling of a broad array of new AI-integrated smart glasses. CEO Mark Zuckerberg presented the devices, positioning them as potential successors to smartphones and as the future interface for personal artificial intelligence.

The expanded lineup includes new Ray-Ban Wayfarer editions, featuring longer battery life, upgraded microphones, and 360-degree audio recording capabilities, with prices starting at $449. Meta also introduced Aviator and Zena-style Ray-Ban smart glasses, alongside new glasses under its own brand designed in collaboration with Blackpink's Lisa. Additionally, enhanced Ray-Ban glasses with built-in displays were announced for international release.

Among the new releases are the camera-less Ray-Ban Audio AI models. These lighter and thinner glasses focus on audio features, offering up to 12 hours of battery life, making them suitable for all-day wear. The absence of cameras aims to address previous privacy concerns associated with recording capabilities.

Despite these advancements, Meta faces continued scrutiny regarding smart glasses, particularly those equipped with cameras. Critics have called for bans, citing the potential for recording individuals without their knowledge or consent. Organizations like the Electronic Frontier Foundation warn of potential privacy violations and data sharing risks, given Meta's history with user data protection.
