Meta web crawlers blamed for website crashes at small businesses

Small business owners report that automated web crawlers operated by Meta are causing critical service disruptions. Tools identified as Meta-ExternalAgent and Meta-WebIndexer, designed to index content for AI training and search services, have reportedly triggered massive spikes in server load, causing websites to crash due to excessive automated requests.

In several documented cases, the bots became trapped in loops while navigating internal functions like shopping carts or file downloads. One business owner noted that Meta bots accounted for 97.6 percent of her server traffic over a four-week period, resulting in significant resource usage spikes and interrupted service for paying customers. The recurring nature of these bots means that once one is blocked, another often takes its place, requiring constant technical manual intervention by site owners.

While Meta states that its practices adhere to standard robots.txt protocols for managing crawl access, affected users argue that the current systems lack sufficient safeguards to protect smaller websites from rogue bot activity. With businesses lacking dedicated IT or security teams, many site owners are forced to manage these technical hurdles independently, fearing that continued disruptions may impact their long-term ability to operate online.
