Meta's Muse Image tool generates AI images from public Instagram photos, drawing privacy concerns
Meta's new AI image generator, Muse Image, can create AI-generated pictures from public Instagram photos by default, sparking backlash over user consent and potential misuse.

Meta has launched a new artificial intelligence tool, Muse Image, which generates AI-created images from public Instagram photos. The tool defaults to using content from public accounts without explicit user notification or consent, drawing immediate criticism.
Muse Image, the first image model from Meta Superintelligence Labs, is accessible through the Meta AI app, web, WhatsApp, and Instagram Stories, powering over 30 new effects. While currently available only to users in the United States, Meta has stated plans for expansion to Facebook and Messenger.
The tool's activation by default for public accounts has ignited significant controversy. Critics warn that Muse Image makes it easier to create non-consensual altered images. Technology non-profit Foxglove described the tool as an "obvious recipe for disaster," citing harms from non-consensual AI-altered images. Privacy International stated it signifies "the latest sign AI companies see people's images and data as raw material to be exploited."
Meta asserts that all outputs will carry an invisible watermark, Content Seal, indicating AI generation. However, critics argue this does not address the core issue of consent or prevent the creation of harmful content. Concerns echo previous issues with Meta's products, including its ad review process and AI glasses' privacy implications.
