ATHENS, Greece and LONDON, Aug. 21, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- METLEN has successfully conducted the first fire on waste at the Protos Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) that it is developing for Encyclis in Cheshire. The "first fire" milestone confirms the state-of-the-art facility is now ready for operation.
The Protos ERF is an energy recovery facility designed to convert non-recyclable waste into electricity and heat. The plant is projected to process up to 150,000 tonnes of household waste annually, significantly reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills. This project marks METLEN's first ERF development in the United Kingdom.
The initial waste fire signifies the transition into the next phase of plant commissioning, focusing on optimizing operations to achieve full capacity. Commercial operation is anticipated to commence later this year. The collaboration with Encyclis has been central to the project's progression.
Metlen is a global technology company specializing in energy production and recycling solutions. The Protos ERF facility in Cheshire reinforces METLEN's presence in the European waste management and energy sector.
