Metsä Board Establishes Packaging Design Studio in Milan

Packaging manufacturer Metsä Board has opened a new design studio in Milan, Italy, on July 2nd. The facility aims to improve collaboration with customers and speed up the development of packaging solutions, particularly for key European markets.

The studio facilitates closer interaction between Metsä Board and its clients, allowing for earlier testing and refinement of packaging concepts. This is intended to lead to faster delivery of market-ready solutions. It combines Metsä Board's premium fresh fibre-based materials, design expertise, and data-driven insights to help brands meet evolving demands for sustainability, performance, and regulatory compliance.

Metsä Board states that packaging's role has expanded beyond mere protection and logistics. Brands face increasing pressure to reduce material usage, replace fossil-based materials, comply with tighter regulations, and maintain shelf appeal. Simultaneously, there are heightened expectations for faster development cycles with greater certainty regarding performance, recyclability, and compliance.

"Milan offers a unique combination of a strong packaging ecosystem and a world-class design environment," said Erja Hyrsky, SVP Commercial Operations. "Being there allows us to work more closely with our customers and strengthen collaboration across key European markets."

The studio employs AI and simulation capabilities for earlier exploration and testing of solutions. This approach aims to reduce uncertainty, expedite decision-making, and shorten development cycles. Clients can co-create and validate solutions before market introduction, a process deemed essential for sectors such as food, pharmaceuticals, and beauty.
