Metsä Board Expands Climate Targets to Include End-of-Life Emissions
Metsä Board has secured validation from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its updated climate goals, which now encompass emissions from the end of product life.

Metsä Board, a producer of fresh fibre paperboards, has received validation from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its updated near-term emissions reduction targets. The company has had SBTi-validated targets in place since 2019.
The update expands Metsä Board's climate ambitions beyond its own production to address greenhouse gas emissions across its entire value chain. This signifies a shift from focusing solely on operational emissions to managing climate impacts throughout the product lifecycle.
As part of this broader approach, Metsä Board has established a new Scope 3 target for emissions resulting from the end-of-life treatment of sold products, committing to a 25% reduction by 2030 from a 2024 baseline.
The company also commits that 47% of its suppliers, covering purchased goods and services and transportation, will have science-based targets by 2030. Metsä Board aims to phase out the use of fossil energy in its production by 2030 and currently operates with 93% fossil-free energy.
