Metsä Group commissions bioproduct mill in Äänekoski
Metsä Group has launched its 1.2 billion euro bioproduct mill in Äänekoski. The facility aims to produce 1.3 million tonnes of pulp annually while developing new bio-based materials.

Metsä Group commenced operations at its new bioproduct mill in Äänekoski on August 15, 2017. The project was completed on schedule and within its 1.2 billion euro budget. Concurrent with the new mill's start-up, the company decommissioned its existing pulp mill, which is currently undergoing dismantling.
The facility is expected to reach its nominal annual production capacity of 1.3 million tonnes of pulp within one year. Alongside pulp, the mill generates outputs such as tall oil and turpentine, while incorporating secondary processes to produce sulphuric acid, biogas, and bio-fuel pellets from industrial side-streams.
The site is intended to serve as an industrial ecosystem for the development of advanced bio-based products. Ongoing research at the location focuses on commercializing lignin-based materials, textile fibers, and biocomposites.
