Metsä Group opens modernized tissue paper mill in Mariestad, Sweden

Metsä Group marked the inauguration of its expanded and modernized tissue paper mill in Mariestad, Sweden, on May 26. The ceremony was attended by external representatives alongside Metsä Group and Metsä Tissue leadership.

The company has made significant investments to strengthen its tissue business in Europe. The €370 million investment in Mariestad is among the largest in the European tissue industry and reinforces Metsä Tissue's position in the hygiene products market.

The renewed mill doubles its annual production capacity to approximately 145,000 tonnes, improving the availability of high-quality tissue products, particularly in Scandinavia. The facility utilizes the latest technology, including a new state-of-the-art tissue paper machine and three new converting lines for rolled and folded products. These enable efficient and responsible production for the company's well-known brands such as Lambi, Serla, and Katrin.

In addition to increased capacity and improved quality, the investment significantly enhances the mill's environmental performance. Improved energy efficiency and reduced water consumption lower emissions per tonne produced. The Mariestad mill began operations in autumn 2025 and is now fully operational.
