Metsä Group plans commercial carbon capture plant in Rauma

Metsä Group is planning the construction of a commercial-scale plant for wood-based carbon capture in the Rauma industrial area. The project aims to further develop and commercialize the company’s proprietary technology, which sequesters carbon dioxide into wood products with long service lives.

The plant is expected to produce one thousand tons of wood-based carbon dioxide annually, which will then be fed into fertilizers and soil conditioners. The company is currently seeking an environmental permit for the project. If granted, production is estimated to begin in 2026.

Metsä Group's goal is to create a completely new business area that utilizes the side streams of the forest industry and wood in novel ways. This project is part of a broader strategy to strengthen the company's competitiveness and promote a circular economy.

Metsä Group is one of Europe's leading forest industry companies. The company's business covers the entire wood processing chain, from the production of pulp, board, wood products, and tissue paper to timber harvesting and sawmilling operations.
