Metsä Tissue Invests in Fresh Fibre Production at Mänttä Mill
Metsä Group's tissue paper business is investing in its Mänttä mill to support its fresh fibre strategy, including modernizing water circulation systems and adding new production lines. Recycled fibre production will cease.

Metsä Group's tissue paper business is intensifying its focus on fresh fibre production with significant investments at its Mänttä mill. The company plans to update processing equipment for fresh fibre and modernize water circulation systems on two tissue paper machines. These upgrades aim to reduce water consumption by an estimated 75–80% and improve energy efficiency by 25%.
The investments are part of the mill's existing EUR 100 million strategic programme, which includes a new hand towel line for fresh fibre products, expected to be operational in 2026. This strategic shift prioritizes the use of northern forest fibres as the primary raw material.
Concurrently, Metsä Tissue plans to discontinue its recycled fibre production at the Mänttä facility and shut down one tissue paper machine at the end of its operational life. These changes will lead to the initiation of change negotiations, potentially affecting up to 35 jobs. The company also indicated plans to open five new positions.
The Mänttä mill produces tissue paper products under brands such as Serla, Lambi, and Katrin, alongside customer-specific brands. The company states that these investments align with its sustainability goals for fossil-free mills and reduced water usage.
