Metso addresses process instability in industrial thickeners

Metso Oyj is focusing on stabilizing thickening processes in the mining and metals sector through its Automation Control Tools (ACT) suite. Traditional Proportional, Integral, Derivative (PID) control loops often struggle to manage the slow response dynamics and the complex interactions between variables inherent in thickening, frequently requiring excessive operator intervention.

The ACT system functions as a high-level architecture that sits above a site’s existing process control system (PCS). By decoupling the advanced control algorithms from standard sequences and human-machine interfaces, the system allows for more precise management of flocculant dosing and underflow pump rates. This coordination is critical for maintaining consistent underflow density despite fluctuations in ore types and incoming mass flows.

According to the company, moving away from simple single-loop controllers addresses the cyclic instability common in thickener operation. Field data from nickel concentrate applications indicate that this automated approach stabilizes bed pressure and improves solids load management, reducing the need for constant onsite expert tuning.
