Metso Deploys Digital Twin Technology at Newmont Lihir Gold Mine

Metso Oyj has deployed its Geminex metallurgical digital twin technology at Newmont's Lihir gold mine in Papua New Guinea. The implementation, which advanced operations in 2023, focuses on optimizing material flows, managing ore feed variability, and maximizing metallurgical processes.

Optimizing material flows within mines and processing plants is critical for achieving productivity targets. Digital twin technologies offer new insights for better management of the production chain, despite variability in ore, processes, and equipment. The objective is to increase production throughput, improve mineral recovery, and reduce operational costs, while also supporting sustainability goals through decreased energy and resource consumption.

The technology utilizes physics-based models combined with AI-driven machine learning algorithms. Geminex continuously adapts to optimize the plant's operational parameters, working in conjunction with advanced process control systems that use real-time data to anticipate the effects of ore composition changes.

According to Metso, the deployment of the digital twin significantly reduces risks related to environmental, financial, or safety concerns. It also enhances operational efficiency and supports decision-making as well as operator training.
