Metso Oyj has introduced its Symons HydroLoop upgrade, a system designed to enhance the performance of older Symons crushers. The system has been successfully implemented at Lexington Quarry in Kentucky, where it has led to improved water recirculation and more efficient operation during winter conditions.

The Lexington Quarry utilizes a 7-foot Symons crusher, originally manufactured in 1948, which remains central to their daily production of approximately 5,000 tons of limestone. However, the traditional fresh water sealing system presented challenges, particularly during harsh winters and with daily water maintenance requirements.

The HydroLoop is a closed-loop water recirculation system that captures, filters, and reuses over 99% of the water used to operate the crusher. The installation is described as simple and plug-and-play, completed in just two hours during a scheduled shutdown. Metso engineer Brian Klett noted that the HydroLoop utilizes the same connections as the existing water system, facilitating a smooth integration.

Donald Ross, the site superintendent, highlighted the benefits during winter. Previously, frozen lines required time-consuming morning routines, but the HydroLoop now allows for the use of glycol in a sealed system, eliminating freezing risks and reducing downtime. The system also significantly reduces repetitive maintenance tasks and stabilizes the sealing water flow.

Metso suggests the HydroLoop upgrade offers a modern solution for the global installed base of Symons crushers, increasing reliability and promoting sustainable water use without compromising the crushers' renowned robustness and operational characteristics.
