Metso Improves Spare Parts Availability and Reduces Costs at Norilsk Nickel

Metso Oyj has successfully implemented a device management solution at the Norilsk Nickel Harjavalta refinery in Finland. The agreement, signed in 2009 between Norilsk Nickel and its maintenance provider ABB Service, transferred the storage, maintenance, and assembly of valves and accessories to Metso.

As a result of this cooperation, spare parts coverage has risen from a previous 40% to 90%. Simultaneously, the inventory value has decreased by 60%. Metso states that device harmonization and an optimized spare parts selection have yielded 50% savings in capital and operational stock expenditures.

The improved device management and streamlined ordering and delivery processes have reduced unplanned downtime. This has contributed to the continuous improvement of process performance and minimized the risk of production or quality losses.

Metso's solution involved an audit of the installed base to ensure correct valve types and codes. The core of the solution is device harmonization, which Metso reports has delivered significant benefits by reducing the number of parts held in stock and ensuring the availability of critical components when needed.
