Metso Invests EUR 150 Million in New Technology Center in Tampere

Metso Oyj has announced a EUR 150 million investment in a new technology center in Lahdesjärvi, Tampere, Finland, with construction beginning in July 2024. The Lokomotion Technology Center will consolidate Metso's current operations in Hatanpää, Tampere, and is expected to be fully completed by the mid-2030s. The initial phase will cover approximately 34,000 square meters, and the project will eventually host over 900 Metso employees.

The new facility will be dedicated to the design, testing, and manufacturing of technologies, equipment, and components for the aggregate and sand production industry. This includes mobile crushers, with production of the track-mounted Lokotrack crushing plants scheduled to commence in the third quarter of 2027. Metso plans a phased relocation from its current Hatanpää site, which has a history of industrial activity spanning over a century.

The Lokomotion project emphasizes sustainable manufacturing operations, aiming to meet demanding environmental objectives. The center is pursuing BREEAM certification with a "very good" rating, and its design will incorporate climate resilience and nature-based solutions as defined by the City of Tampere's green factor requirements for the area. This approach aligns with Metso's broader strategy for efficiency and environmental responsibility.

Metso's equipment plays a crucial role in infrastructure development, supporting the construction of roads, railways, and buildings. The technology is also utilized for recycling construction waste and producing industrial sand, reducing reliance on natural sand. This investment underscores Metso's commitment to its Tampere operations and its position in the global market for sustainable aggregate processing solutions.
