Metso Launches New Flotation Technology for Mining
Metso Oyj has introduced the Sampo™ Cell technology, designed to enhance ore processing efficiency by recovering coarser particles.

Metso Oyj has unveiled its new Sampo™ Cell technology, aimed at improving ore processing efficiency by enabling the recovery of coarser particles without compromising the capture of finer ones. The development seeks to boost the overall efficiency, profitability, and sustainability of mining operations.
Traditional flotation processes often rely on extensive grinding to bring ore particles to an optimal size range for effective recovery. The Sampo Cell technology utilizes a froth-feeding principle, introducing slurry directly into the froth phase. This method reduces turbulence, allowing for the capture of particles that would typically be lost in conventional flotation circuits. The technology can be applied for initial gangue rejection or as a scavenger stage to recover valuable particles.
Metso highlights the Sampo Cell's simplified design and operational approach. It does not require feed classification, fluidization water, or additional concentrate dewatering stages, thereby reducing equipment needs and facilitating easier integration into existing plants. The system employs familiar flotation controls and instrumentation.
Industrial-scale trials of the technology have been underway since March 2026 at a copper mine in Chile. Continuous operation has demonstrated a significant increase in overall plant recovery by capturing particles previously lost. Metso Oyj is reinforcing its portfolio in flotation technology with this offering, providing comprehensive solutions for mineral processing.
