Metso Oyj has released guidance focusing on the proper sizing and selection of bulk material handling equipment, particularly apron feeders, within the mining industry. Company expert Martin Yester emphasizes that achieving maximum results and uptime requires more than just simple calculations.
Accurate sizing necessitates a thorough understanding of the entire process. Key criteria include feed rate (peak and normal), material characteristics such as moisture, gradation, shape, and bulk density (maximum and minimum). It is also crucial to know the maximum lump size of the ore or rock, along with feed and discharge conditions.
A significant additional variable in the sizing process is the hopper configuration, specifically the shear length opening directly above the apron feeder. This dimension is critical for properly sizing not only the apron feeder itself but also its drive system, such as the motor. Determining this shear length helps establish the actual shear plane of the material and the force required to separate it.
Yester highlights the importance of using bulk density, not solid density, for apron feeder calculations. Bulk density determines the speed and power (torque) needed to extract a specific tonnage per hour. Incorrect calculations can jeopardize the production process and increase operational expenses.
