Metso Oyj Lists Top 5 Critical Maintenance Issues for Rotary Kilns
Metso Oyj has detailed five critical maintenance issues that affect rotary kilns. The company emphasizes regular inspections to prevent failures and ensure operational reliability.

Metso Oyj, a global industrial company, has identified five critical maintenance issues impacting the operation and longevity of rotary kilns. The company's guidance aims to help maintenance teams proactively address potential problems.
Proper lubrication of kiln components is highlighted as essential for operational health. Metso notes that both excess and insufficient lubrication can lead to detrimental outcomes, including fire hazards and severe equipment damage if critical parts like gearboxes and rollers are not adequately lubricated.
Kiln misalignment, both horizontally and vertically, is another key concern. The company states that untreated misalignment can result in unpredictable operation and reduced reliability. Metso recommends kiln realignment and leveling every one to three years, depending on the equipment's condition, and particularly after major component replacements.
Other identified issues include inadequate thrust balance at supporting piers, kiln shell distortion (termed "shell crank" or "dogleg"), and irregular kiln shell ovality. These factors can lead to uneven loading, vibrations, component stress, and decreased operational efficiency.
Metso stresses that consistent inspections and servicing are crucial for preventing these issues. A hot-kiln alignment and mechanical survey are recommended as a starting point for comprehensive maintenance planning.
