Metso: Proper Gear Lubrication Critical for Operational Performance
Metso highlights that improper gear lubrication is the leading cause of gear failures, emphasizing the need for correct lubricant selection and application to ensure operational reliability.

Metso Oyj, a supplier of industrial equipment and services, is underscoring the critical role of proper gear lubrication in achieving operational excellence and preventing costly failures. According to the company's technical experts, incorrect or insufficient lubrication stands out as the primary reason for gear and pinion damage.
Jean Bernard Demers, Product Director at Metso, stated that while contamination and misalignment can cause issues over weeks or months, lubrication problems can lead to catastrophic failure almost overnight. The choice and application of lubricants are therefore paramount for maintaining equipment integrity. Experience shows that lubrication failures have sent more pinions to the scrapyard than any other cause.
The company notes that issues such as localized scuffing or even metal fusion, resulting from metal-to-metal contact due to a lack of lubrication, can have severe consequences. Such failures might stem from a malfunctioning lubrication system or the use of an inappropriate lubricant type.
Metso points out that various lubricant types, including asphaltics, oils, and greases, are available, each with distinct properties and application methods. Regardless of the chosen lubricant, adherence to industry standards like AGMA 9005 for application is essential to ensure adequate lubrication and prolong equipment life.
