Metso shifts focus to digital services for aggregate production
Metso Oyj has expanded its digital service portfolio to emphasize predictive maintenance and automated performance software, aiming to improve equipment uptime in the aggregate industry.

Metso Oyj is pivoting toward software-driven efficiency as a primary strategy for its aggregate equipment segment. Following the introduction of an enhanced digital service portfolio at the CONEXPO-CON/AGG trade show, the company is prioritizing predictive maintenance and automated operational controls over traditional hardware-focused product cycles.
The central pillar of this transition is a predictive maintenance system that uses equipment data to identify potential mechanical failures before they occur. By transitioning from reactive repair models to a proactive approach, Metso intends to help operators minimize unscheduled downtime. The company is coordinating these efforts with its distributor network to streamline parts availability based on predictive analytics.
In addition to maintenance, Metso is deploying software solutions such as Adaptive Feed Control and Remote IC to optimize crushing output. According to Jaakko Huhtapelto, Vice President of Technology and Digital Business for Aggregates, pilot programs using these tools have yielded production throughput increases of 10% to 15%.
The initiative signals a broader industry trend where original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) increasingly rely on digital insights to drive profitability. Metso's approach aims to leverage software as a cost-effective alternative to hardware modifications, focusing on maximizing the utility of existing machinery.
