Metso supplies 9.25 km conveyor belt to AES Maritza East 1 power plant
Metso Oyj has delivered a 9,250-meter-long FLEXOPIPE pipe conveyor belt to the AES Maritza East 1 coal-fired power plant in Bulgaria. The new system aims to reduce operational costs and enhance site safety.

Helsinki, Finland โ August 30, 2021 โ Metso Oyj has supplied a 9,250-meter-long FLEXOPIPE pipe conveyor belt to the AES Maritza East 1 power plant located in Bulgaria. The lignite coal-fired facility, operated by AES Corporation, required a replacement for its worn-out pipe conveyor belt used for waste transportation.
The new FLEXOPIPE belt is designed to minimize operational costs and increase safety at the site. It ensures an undisrupted waste disposal process, transporting materials from the plant to the disposal facility. This uninterrupted operation is crucial for maintaining human and environmental safety standards at the facility.
The installation project, which saw the completion of the 9,250-meter conveyor belt, concluded in late September 2020. The implementation also includes benefits such as lower maintenance costs, increased safety, and robust technology. AES Maritza East 1 is a 670-MW facility and represents a significant foreign investment in Bulgaria.
The Metso solution provides a fully enclosed material transport system, preventing dust emissions. The pipe conveyor belt forms a 400mm diameter tube when operational, carrying material internally. Additional features include special noiseless rollers and sound-insulating covers to reduce operational noise. Pipe conveyor belts are suitable for transporting materials like industrial waste, ash, or shredded tires, which can pose environmental hazards if not contained.
