MGCS Project Company established in Cologne, advancing Franco-German tank program

The Main Ground Combat System (MGCS) project, a significant defense initiative between France and Germany, has moved forward with the incorporation of MGCS Project Company GmbH (MPC). The company was legally established in Cologne on April 10, 2025, following approval from the German Federal Cartel Office. Key partners in its founding include KNDS Deutschland, KNDS France, Rheinmetall Landsysteme, and Thales.

This newly formed company is set to operate as the industrial prime contractor for the subsequent implementation phase of the MGCS program. Its primary responsibilities will include consolidating the concept and the main technological pillars of the system. The company will assume control of the program's next steps upon the conclusion of contract negotiations with the German Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support of the Bundeswehr (BAAINBw), which is managing the project on behalf of both nations through a combined Franco-German project team.

Launched at the initiative of the French and German governments, the MGCS project aims to replace the current Leopard 2 and Leclerc main battle tanks with a new multi-platform ground combat system by the year 2040. The establishment of the project company is seen as crucial for defining the future direction and technological roadmap of this next-generation armored vehicle.

The creation of MPC signifies a structured approach to industrial collaboration and development. It is expected to facilitate clearer responsibilities and streamline the complex process of developing a state-of-the-art battle tank system designed to enhance the defense capabilities and interoperability of European nations.
