Michael Dell: AI needs safeguards and controls, government has a role
Michael Dell, CEO of Dell Technologies, stated that AI models require "safeguards and controls," emphasizing the government's role in regulating the technology.

Michael Dell, CEO of Dell Technologies, has stated that AI models "have to have safeguards and controls" as the debate continues regarding the potential threats posed by the rapidly evolving technology.
During an interview with CNBC, Dell used the analogy of fire, which can heat a home but also burn down a village, to emphasize the need for controlled solutions. "We have to have safeguards and controls," Dell said.
He acknowledged that "there's a role for government to play" and that companies developing AI tools should also set "bounded permissions." However, Dell did not specify what that government role might look like, describing himself as "not a policymaker."
The recent discussions surrounding AI risks have intensified, with warnings from industry insiders about the dangers of pursuing "superintelligence." Leaders from other major tech firms, including Anthropic and OpenAI, have also joined calls for increased regulation.
Dell Technologies has also commented on the growing opposition to data center construction. Dell viewed the increased discussion as positive and noted that the company is working with its customers on efficiency and reduced energy consumption, which he does not see as a major impediment for 2027.
