Michelin Aims for All Sustainable Tires by 2050
Tire manufacturer Michelin has pledged to design and mass produce tires that are entirely sustainable by 2050. The company defines a sustainable tire as one that minimizes environmental impact throughout its entire lifecycle.
Michelin, the global tire manufacturer, has announced its commitment to designing and mass-producing tires that are entirely sustainable by the year 2050. The company's definition of an "all sustainable tire" extends beyond the use of recycled or bio-based materials to encompass minimizing environmental and social impact across the tire's full lifecycle.
Central to Michelin's strategy is ensuring tires offer long-lasting performance from the first mile to the legal wear limit. This approach aims to reduce material consumption and energy use, thereby extending tire life and decreasing the frequency of replacements. Furthermore, these sustainable tires must meet or exceed current safety performance standards and be suitable for mass production.
The company highlights that the use phase of a tire accounts for the largest portion of its environmental impact, between 75% and 90%. Michelin has focused on improving tire rolling resistance for decades, which directly impacts fuel efficiency and reduces CO2 emissions. If all tires in Europe were utilized to their legal wear limit, the company estimates a saving of 128 million tires and 6.6 million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.
In manufacturing, Michelin is leveraging virtual testing and simulation technologies to streamline tire development, reducing the need for physical prototypes and tests, and consequently lowering CO2 emissions. The company also aims for net-zero CO2 emissions from its plants by 2050 and is working to eliminate solvents in production. Logistics emissions are targeted for a 15% reduction by 2030 through a localized production strategy. Investments in recycling and the development of new materials are also key components of this initiative.
Michelin acknowledges that developing sustainable tires requires finding alternatives to current components without compromising performance or safety. The company plans to utilize its extensive expertise in high-tech materials, backed by thousands of patents, to overcome these challenges and achieve its 2050 goal.
