Michelin Innovation Lab Explores New Business Areas
Michelin's 10-year-old Innovation Lab (MIL) supports internal projects and employee initiatives to develop new markets beyond tires.

Michelin's decade-old Innovation Lab (MIL) actively supports employee-generated ideas and fosters the development of new business areas outside the company's core tire operations. The lab aims to invent, nurture, and incubate future products and services, preparing them for large-scale commercialization.
By 2030, Michelin aims for one-third of its sales to come from non-tire markets. This diversification strategy involves investments in areas such as hydrogen technology, high-tech materials, e-commerce, digital applications, and 3D printing. The MIL operates globally with four locations—Europe, the United States, China, and India—and reports to the Group's Innovation and Partnerships Directorate.
Employees can submit ideas through the digital NewBiz platform. Validated projects undergo a proof-of-concept phase and business plan refinement before entering incubation. During this stage, the employee transitions into a full-time intrapreneur role within the company.
The lab embraces both internal and external open innovation, collaborating with research institutions, students, and startups. Notable MIL initiatives include ResiCare, a non-toxic, bio-based adhesive resin for industrial applications and tire reinforcement, and Wisamo, a wing sail propulsion system for decarbonizing maritime shipping.
