Tire manufacturer Michelin is advancing its technology by integrating connected features into its tires. The company employs Tire Mounted Sensors (TMS) to collect real-time data on inflation pressure and temperature, which is then processed by algorithms into actionable information.
These connected tires also feature an integrated Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip, acting as a digital identity card for each tire. This chip stores manufacturing and material information, crucial for efficient recycling and the reuse of high-quality materials, supporting Michelin's circular economy goals.
Michelin's connected solutions aim to foster more sustainable mobility by providing data that can optimize tire usage, enhance safety, and improve operational efficiency. This approach is further supported by algorithms that can evaluate tire wear and grip, offering advanced functions for vehicle manufacturers (OEMs).
With over 15 years of experience in connected tire technology, Michelin has equipped more than 200,000 vehicles, ranging from mining equipment to premium electric cars. The company leverages data from motorsports, such as Formula E, to accelerate research and development in this field.
