Michelin Leverages Motorsport for Technology Development
Tire manufacturer Michelin is using its extensive motorsport history to drive technological innovation, with a renewed focus on environmental advancements.

Michelin, the tire manufacturer, has accumulated over 1,200 victories across various motorsport disciplines throughout its history. The company states it is now channeling this competitive experience and its research resources into developing environmentally sustainable innovations.
Michelin's motorsport legacy spans more than a century, featuring numerous wins in Formula 1, MotoGP, the World Rally Championship, and endurance races, including every 24 Hours of Le Mans victory since 1998. The company highlights that motorsport competitions have served as a testing ground for its technological advancements.
An early example of Michelin's innovation is its patented removable rim from 1906, which significantly reduced tire changing times compared to conventional methods. More recent developments include the introduction of slick radial tires at Le Mans in 1967, designed for enhanced grip in dry conditions.
Michelin now reports it is focusing insights and experience gained from motorsport to accelerate environmentally conscious developments. This includes efforts to utilize renewable or recycled raw materials and to advance modeling and simulation in tire development.
