Michelin targets net-zero carbon emissions by 2050

Tire manufacturer Michelin has outlined a comprehensive decarbonization strategy aiming for net-zero emissions across its entire value chain by 2050.

4 November 2026

Michelin has formalized its commitment to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, as part of a long-term strategy to address its environmental impact. The roadmap includes interim targets for 2030, covering production sites, logistics operations, and supply chain processes.

The initiative is verified by the Science Based Targets (SBTi) framework. Michelin aims for a 90% reduction in total CO2 emissions, planning to address residual emissions through carbon capture and storage technologies. Crucially, the company has stated that it will not rely on carbon offsets to achieve these goals, focusing instead on internal operational changes and the integration of recycled and renewable materials.

Beyond production, the company is diversifying its portfolio to include low-carbon mobility solutions, such as hydrogen infrastructure development. This effort follows a decades-long trajectory of environmental initiatives, starting with the introduction of low-rolling-resistance tires in 1992.
